Troy University is accepting applications for The 87, an honor recognizing students for their campus involvement and leadership.

Applications for the 2026-2027 academic year are due Friday, October 30. The Office of Student Engagement and Leadership selects 87 students each year.

Previously known as Who’s Who Among Students, the recognition is named in honor of Troy’s founding year - 1887.

Juniors and seniors with an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and graduate students with an overall GPA of at least 3.5 are eligible to apply, according to the university’s announcement. The invitation is for students who have not previously received the honor.

Emily Nichols, a co-adviser for The 87, said the program received more than 200 applications last year.

Nichols said reviewers look for students who have stayed involved in an organization over several semesters and taken on leadership roles.

For example, she said a student who spends four semesters in an organization and serves in a leadership role for two shows growth within the group.

Riley Commander, a senior social work major from Marianna, Florida, said being selected helped create connections with alumni and other students.

“I felt honored to be chosen because it meant that my hard work in and out of the classroom had paid off,” Commander said.

Annsley Wallace, a junior nursing major from Greenville, Alabama, said her love for Troy and desire to make a positive impact motivated her to apply.

“I have always believed that leadership is not about the titles we hold, but rather the way we make people feel and the impact we leave behind,” Wallace said.

Students can submit the online application by Oct. 30. Applicants should include their campus involvement, leadership positions and the number of semesters they have participated.

There is no application fee. Questions can be directed to Nichols at edapprich@troy.edu.

Faculty members will review applications after the deadline. Nichols said selected students will receive certificates at a reception at the chancellor’s home.

Details will be included in their selection emails.

Commander encouraged eligible students to apply.

“No involvement is too small, and anything you have participated in is important,” Commander said.
