Troy student works in NYC

Connor Murphy-White, a senior music industry and theater double major from Greenville, is spending the semester interning in New York City as she works on achieving her dreams.

Murphy-White is currently in Midtown Manhattan doing an internship with Distinguished Concerts International New York. The internship is a semester long, starting Jan. 7 and ending April 28.

“We have a beautiful view of the city from the 16th floor right on Broadway,” Murphy-White said. “We are located two blocks from Carnegie Hall, with whom we produce many concerts.”

The group also works to produce concerts at Lincoln Center, where the Metropolitan Opera and Juilliard are found.

When asked how she ended up there, she said, “I chose DCINY from many production companies in NYC because of the caliber of their concerts and based upon the recommendation of my adviser, Robert W. Smith.”

She found herself well-qualified to have her pick of internships.

Murphy-White has participated in numerous vocal master classes and coachings in the U.S. and Germany, including some with David Cangelosi (Metropolitan Opera tenor) and Patricia Risley (Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano).

“I received second place at VANN Vocal Institute’s Emerging Artists Finals,” Murphy-White said. “I have sung at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York City.”

Although her internship has just begun, Murphy-White has already worked in several areas at DCINY.

“I help with every department. Lately, my time has been focused on the production side,” Murphy-White said. “I have labeled, sorted and collocated directors’ bags. I’ve made directors’ cheat sheets and contact sheets, packed the merchandising bags for concert sales and a lot of sales-force work. They threw me right into the thick of things.”

After completing her undergraduate studies, Murphy-White plans to go to graduate school to pursue her masters in vocal performance, but says, “I would also like to travel. So we shall see … maybe a backpacking trip across Europe?”
