Troy's Next Intramural Sport: Water Pong

Intramural sports go through a cycle of various games throughout the year. However, the next one coming up is a classic college party staple: water pong.

Water pong is a game where 10 cups, filled with water, are set up on either side of a table. A line is drawn, and the object of the game is to shoot a ping pong ball across the table into the cups on the other side to relieve them. Whichever team is the first to relieve all the cups on the other team’s side is the winner.

“A lot of people brought it to our attention just to have a little more fun at the Rec,” said Coordinator of Competitive Sports at Troy’s Recreation Center Chas Cary. “It is a knock-off of a fraternity sport, so it’s gotten a large traction with people that play.”

The game is played in teams of two. Water pong will have leagues for men’s doubles, women’s doubles and co-rec. The tournament will start on March 2.

Intramural sports are a way for students to meet new people while staying active.

“If you’re a freshman, and you want to come back to whatever sport you’ve played before,” said Parker Turner, a senior physical education major from Dothan, Alabama. “You can make friends through team activities.

“Step out of your comfort zone and try intramural sports.”

For some, it’s just about having fun.

“I’ve always been involved in athletics,” said Sarah Kate Thompson, a junior accounting major from Taylor, Alabama. “I think intramurals are fun and a good way for people to stay active in college.”

Other than water pong, there are a variety of intramural sports students can be involved in throughout the year. In the fall semester, these sports include volleyball, flag football and spike ball. The spring semester sports can switch around, but they usually include basketball, softball and blacklight volleyball.

“I played flag football for the first time this past year,” Thompson said. “It was fun, and it was a new experience.

Not only are intramurals a way for students to have fun, it also unites them in ways they may not have imagined.

“I love the joy that intramurals bring people together,” Cary said. “A lot of these kids didn’t have the chance to play at a collegiate school or at the next level past high school, and to see them having fun and goofing around with each other just brings light into my heart.”

Registration for water pong is open now on the IMLeagues app. Follow @troycampusrec on Instagram for more information about intramural sports.
