The Troy University Campus Library held an author talk last Thursday featuring Alabama native Mildred Mills. The event was open to all Troy students and allowed a one-on-one discussion about family struggle, overcoming adversity and forging the future.

The discussion opened with a brief reading from Mills’ most successful novel, “Daddy's House: A Daughter's Memoir of Setbacks, Triumphs & Rising Above Her Roots,” and all students received an autographed copy and a free bookmarkStudents sang high praises for the event and the personable feeling and connectivity they felt while attending.

“I was able to relate with her in the fact that I was coming into something new, especially with going to college, and it can be frightening and challenging,” said Sandra Hall, a freshman human resource management major from Highland Home, Alabama. “I felt like what she said really hit home and made me realize that people go through a lot and you just have to be strong enough to persevere and be resilient.”

Mills spoke with a focus on how to be B.R.A.V.E. and walked through each letter of the acronym with the corresponding word and personable story. The conclusion was a heartfelt conversation about the struggles of life and how to make the best of any situation.

“Regardless of what your circumstances are, you will stumble, and when you do, just get up and keep going,” Mills said. “When something doesn’t feel right, it usually isn’t right. It’s up to you to listen to that small voice inside your head and take notice."

This event also allowed students to encounter the various services and events the library has to offer. This includes printing opportunities, quiet study spaces as well as several historical and literature-focused social events.

“I think it’s important for students to hear different voices and perspectives. Some people have just lived a in a variety of experiences,” said Stephanie White, the university’s social sciences librarian and events coordinator. “These events are very low key. It’s in a quieter space, and we want it to be like a third space for them.”
