With federal funding interrupted by the ongoing government shutdown, military students are not receiving their regular Military Tuition Assistance (TA) to pay for schooling. To counter this, Troy University is now offering a temporary tuition scholarship for military students impacted by the shutdown, ensuring that eligible service members can continue their education with no out-of-pocket expenses.

“We’re trying to support all of our students however we can during the shutdown,” said Scot Brumbeloe, director of military and veterans' affairs at Troy.

All previously approved TA has been canceled by each service branch until further notice. Troy will offer scholarships that are the same amount paid to students through TA for any actively serving member or civilian receiving military TA.

“As a marine, I learned you never leave anyone behind on the battlefield,” said Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. in a Troy.today article. “This is a time of uncertainty, but Troy University won’t let our military students face this challenge alone.

“We will proudly provide a scholarship equal to tuition assistance so that our service members’ educational goals are not disrupted.”

To ensure service members receive this scholarship, Troy for Troops asks that students send proof of pending or submitted TA requests to taforms@troy.edu

“Troy University takes great pride in its long tradition of service to America’s military men and women and their families,” Hawkins said for Troy.today. “Because of this history, we understand the unique needs of military students and remain committed to helping them achieve their educational and career goals.”

Brumbeloe also offered some supportive words to students who may be struggling during the shutdown.

“I know that it’s uncertain, but we are encouraging those active-duty military students to continue with their education plans,” Brumbeloe said. “Of course we are here to support them however we can.”

Troy University military personnel were asked to comment but shared that they are not allowed to discuss the topic.
