Troy University has recently received approval for its Doctor of Chiropractic program, making it the fifth doctoral program offered through Troy University.

The university will be the second public institution in America to offer the program and the first in the south.

“Being the second public institution to offer the degree will bring more recognition to Troy University,” said Dr. Mary Anne Templeton, associate provost and dean of the graduate school. “The program will also offer a new line of research for the university, with potential collaborations with existing programs.”

The initial program proposal was submitted and approved by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education in Sept. 2025 and later received a final approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) in Jan. 2026.

Troy University was reclassified as a doctoral-granting institution in September of 2023, which removed the limit of doctoral programs the school can offer. The university has since launched doctoral programs in criminology and, as of this past month, chiropractic.

“The Doctor of Chiropractic program will help demonstrate that Troy University is maturing into a doctoral-level research institution,” said Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Dr. Kerry Palmer. “It will also be the signature program on our Dothan campus, bringing life and vitality to that location.

“I believe we will someday have the premiere chiropractic program in America. I look forward to that day with great anticipation.”

The decision to house this program at the Dothan campus came as there is already an established and successful health and sciences program, and its ideal location to Florida and Georgia.

Troy University will be making history through the launch of this new program, and many anticipate great success.

"This historic achievement represents Troy University's continued commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare education," said Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. in an interview with the Troy Messenger. "The program not only breaks new ground but also addresses critical needs by training the next generation of chiropractors dedicated to serving their communities."

The program is set to begin in the fall semester of 2027 at the Troy Dothan campus.
