Troy University is preparing to hold its second annual Trojan Research Week. The event will take place April 21-24 and feature submissions from every college.

The event was created to showcase the work of Troy students and give them time to research and present on topics that they find interesting. The school's hope is the event pushes students to strike out on their own and research topics they are curious about.

As for how it works, each college takes one day to gather and present its body of research.

Last year's competition featured dozens of students presenting on everything from the fish of Troy University to the stories of Black soldiers that served during the civil war.

Dr. Ben Robertson is a professor of English and one of the event coordinators. He thinks one of the best parts of the event is simply putting yourself out there.

“Students get the chance to really practice public speaking and present their ideas,” Robertson said.

According to Robertson, the presentations can take one of three forms. A written paper, presented to a live audience, a two foot by three foot poster or a live performance.

Dr. Shari Hoppin is a professor of communications and has encouraged many of her students to submit their work for this year.

According to Hoppin, her favorite submission from last year presented about how music could evoke feelings and influence interpretation of a film based on Kafka’s“Metamorphosis.” The presenter, she said, showed clips from the film and played the piano.

Dr. Kerry Palmer, senior vice chancellor of academic affairs, hopes everyone involved benefits from the experience.

“I would like for participants in Trojan Research Week to come away with a sense of confidence in their ability to conduct and present quality research,” Palmer said.

Submissions for Trojan Research Week are due March 27th. For more information or to enter a submission, visit my.troy.edu/communication-fine-arts and click the Trojan Research Week Application.
