Trojan Tennis Update

Photo by: Joshua Thurston TROY, Ala. – The Troy women’s tennis team picked up a win last weekend, as they won their home opener before dropping a contest on the road. The Samford Bulldogs traveled to the Lunsford Tennis Complex on Saturday and took the opening point, but eventually fell, 5-2, to give the Trojans a win in the first home match of the season. Troy nearly swept singles play, with the lone loss coming at first singles in three sets. All of five Troy’s wins came in straight sets with just one going to a tiebreaker. The Trojans had quick relaxation time, as they traveled to Birmingham Sunday to face UAB. Troy jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but couldn’t hold on and fell 4-3 in a match that lasted over five hours. Troy jumped out early with two doubles wins to clinch the opening point, but a rally by UAB allowed the Blazers to win the last four singles matches to claim the victory. Karoline Grymel won the first set of a three set match against Isabel Fernandez, but couldn’t hold on as she fell 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. The match tied the score at 3-3 and a win at fourth singles for UAB gave the Blazers the match. Rosaura Ramirez-Vega took her fifth singles win, 6-2, 6-1, after the Trojans won at second and third doubles to take the opening point. Anja Cosovic, who continues to play well for Troy, won 7-5, 6-2 to push the Troy lead to 3-0. Just a freshman, she is now 6-2 in dual matches this spring. The final two matches were setup by second and sixth singles wins by the Blazers, as Hannah Toro was again injured and did not play in the second spot in the singles lineup. The Trojans return to the court on Saturday when they host Georgia Southern at the Lunsford Tennis Complex in Troy.
