Trojan Pantry seeing more in need amid government shutdown

The Trojan Pantry is combating on-campus food insecurity by making sure students have access to the resources they need – resources which are becoming less available for some due to the current government shutdown.

Operated by the Office of Civic Engagement, the pantry provides free access to food, hygiene products and basic school supplies for all enrolled students. With nearly one-third of students facing food insecurity, the Trojan Pantry plays a key role in supporting student success and well-being.

That well-being is being challenged by the government shutdown.

“The government shutdown has impacted us a lot because we have a lot of new people coming who usually rely on food stamps, which is perfectly fine,” said Team Leader Omari Brown, a sophomore accounting major from Auburn, Alabama. “Before the shutdown, we used to see around 15 to 20 people come to the pantry each day.

“Now, we’re seeing anywhere from 30 to 40 people show up. Luckily, we've been able to raise most of our limits on items because of the donations we've been receiving.

“Thankfully, due to Homecoming week, we received a ton of donations, so we're ready to meet students’ needs.”

Since the government shutdown, the pantry has updated its hours. In addition to being open Monday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the pantry is now open Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“The pantry is a friendly face, and we're always available,” said Co-team Leader Aleah Lawson, a sophomore elementary education major from Huntsville, Alabama. “We want you to be able to eat well so you can do well in class.

“Food insecurity should not stop you from being a good student.”

Private appointments are an option for students who might not feel comfortable going to the food pantry.

“Students may email trojanpantry@troy.edu to set up a private appointment at the Trojan Pantry if they have concerns about anonymity,” said Lauren Cochran, the coordinator of the Office of Civic Engagement. “Our pantry uses a client-choice model to allow students to select items that best fit their personal preferences and dietary needs, rather than providing pre-made bags or boxes.”

The Trojan Pantry is located in Trojan Village 200. Readers looking to support students during this time may donate food items or monetarily by visiting troy.edu/pantry
