Trojan Grill: Yay or Nay

Like many other returning students, I was shocked to walk into Trojan Center (TC) and see that Steak ‘n Shake had been replaced by a new restaurant called “Trojan Grill.” Unlike the other restaurants in TC, Trojan Grill is not a chain restaurant and is unique to Troy University.

Trojan Grill has an extensive menu with smash burgers, fries, wings, pizza, Philly cheese steaks and more. They also have a breakfast menu with build-your-own breakfast plates and yogurt options.

I first went to try it for myself on the first Thursday of the semester, but TC was packed, and the line was too long for my liking. I went back the next day around 1 p.m., and it was much better.

I ordered at the kiosk. The setup was pretty much identical to Chick-fil-A’s system, so its system is fairly intuitive for returning students. I ordered a single smash burger combo with a side of cheese fries and a drink for $10.18.

It was a 60 cents upcharge to add cheese to my burger, which I wasn’t a fan of. The kiosk also did not have an option to add ketchup, so I had to add it myself.

It was $1.09 for me to add cheese fries. I found it strange that all sides cost some amount of money to add, even a plain, large order of fries.

I looked for a small fry option with no charge but did not see one. The only thing in that combo that comes with the burger at no added cost is the drink.

I ordered around 1:15 p.m. and got my food around 1:30 p.m. Other students reported waiting times of around 20 minutes during the lunch rush that day, so I was pleased with my 15-minute wait.

On the wall next to Boar’s Head and the drink machines are numbered lockers where you’re supposed to pick up your food. The day that I went, they were not being used, and the cashier instead called out orders at the register for pickup.

I figured the kinks in the system hadn’t been worked out yet. I didn’t mind picking my food up at the register.

It was just confusing how a crowd of people formed, waiting for their food. I thought they were waiting to order. I’m sure this will be remedied whenever the locker system is worked out.

It was fairly busy both days, and the staff was still adjusting, so I understood it might take a while. I’m sure they will shorten wait times as the semester continues.

The food itself was pretty good. The cheese on the burger was melted nicely, and the onions were fresh and crunchy. Otherwise, the burger was your standard fast-food burger.

The fries were the real standout. They were a similar cut to Wendy’s but better.

They were hot and crispy. A friend of mine tried a few and remarked that they were perfectly salted, to which I agreed.

I got them as cheese fries, so they came with nacho cheese on top. It reminded me of the classic nacho cheese you would get at a baseball game. It was very delicious and nostalgic.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Trojan Grill. I had a solid cheeseburger and some excellent cheese fries. I would happily go again and try the rest of their menu.
