The Chancellor's 5 steps to success

Joey Meredith photo Chancellor Jack Hawkins greets T-Roy, Troy University Athletics’ mascot. Hawkins has led the university since 1989. You may see T-Roy around campus and at events. You can find him on Twitter (@TroyTheMascot).Jack Hawkins Jr., Ph.D. Welcome to Troy University! The 2019 IMPACT session will provide an orientation to your new “home away from home” and will create the foundation for you to enjoy a successful college life at your university. You are entering college at an exciting time. Changes, especially innovations in technology, are unprecedented. However, some things about college never change.Knowing a few basic truths will enable you to get the most out of your TROY experience. 1 An involved student is a successful student. We have more than 150 student organizations that promote engagement in campus life. Find the one (or more) that is right for you. Involvement will add value to your college experience, and you will make friends to last a lifetime. In addition, you will find opportunities for leadership that will prepare you for the future. 2 Embrace Troy University! As Alabama’s International University, TROY is the most diverse university in the state. You will meet classmates from almost 80 nations. Get to know them. It will prepare you for the global marketplace you will enter after graduation. 3 Travel. Our study-abroad program sends students to countries around the world. We offer $1,000 scholarships to help offset the expense of studying abroad. Plan now to make an international experience part of your TROY experience. 4 Learn our traditions — they are your traditions, too! Learn the words to the fight song and the alma mater. Doing so will enable you to make TROY “your” university from day one of your college experience. 5 Establish priorities. Have fun, but remember why you are here. GO TO CLASS! Make academic success your No. 1 goal. Manage your money well, and keep your student debt low. Don’t saddle yourself with unnecessary debt after graduation. One final thought: At TROY, we are preparing you to excel in the world around you and to excel in the world of work. Your university experience should prepare you to make a good living and live a good life. Again, I am pleased that you chose Troy University and I am confident the IMPACT sessions will be helpful to you. Do not hesitate to ask questions of your IMPACT leaders. They are here to assist you!Welcome to Troy University!
