Students welcomed at Convocation

Troy welcomed incoming freshmen at the annual Odyssey Convocation in Trojan Arena on Sunday.

The Odyssey Convocation is a time for new students to learn about the ways Troy has had a positive impact on former students.

“It is important for students to attend to meet the deans of their colleges, senior leaders of our university, and hear from alumni who have excelled after graduating from Troy University,” said Betsy Bennett, Student Government Association president, and a senior human services major from Eufaula, Alabama. “We are so excited to welcome our new Trojans as they become a part of the Trojan Family.”

The Sound of the South Band and auxiliary members all marched in, playing loud and proud, to mark the start of the ceremony.

The keynote speaker Katie Saliba spoke about how her time at Troy University prepared her for her adult life and fast-paced job.

The Trojan Torch was lit by students from each college in the university on stage with their respective deans. Students cheered, and the Alma Mater and Fight Song were sung for the first time this year.

Bennett acknowledged that coming to a new place can sometimes be challenging.

“Here at Troy, we aim to make sure students feel welcome and accepted here at their home away from home,” Bennett said. “Students should expect to meet people from all over the world, adjust to a new environment and, hopefully, make memories that will last a lifetime.”

Many freshmen said they hope to make lasting memories at Troy.

“I'm really looking forward to making a bunch of new friends at Troy and hopefully make a lot of long-lasting memories,” said Mia Schuler, a freshman theater education major from Foley, Alabama. “I'm expecting to hopefully be inspired by the Odyssey Convocation to keep working hard and continuing my path of education.”

Other students shared similar excitement about the convocation.

“I've heard a lot of people from all over the state say that Troy is probably one of the greatest schools as far as, you know, studying theater,” said Justin Scurlock, a freshman from Mobile, Alabama majoring in theatre arts. “Honestly, I'm really looking forward to meeting some new people, and maybe some long-term friends.”
