Students, faculty and staff were invited to eat chili and meet the people who protect and serve Troy at the third annual Battle of the Badges Chili Cookoff held by the Troy University Police Department (TUPD) and other local first responders.
This year's cook-off saw the highest turnout of chili bringers since it began in 2024, with 12 different chilis to choose from. It was also a way for students to meet those who protect and serve the community.
"We've got someone from almost every department here,” said TUPD Sergeant Rachel Farmer. “I think what a lot of students don't realize is that we all serve our students.
“It's a way for them to come through, they taste the chili, and then they can talk with all of us. We're all over here watching and waiting to see who wins."
Businesses around Troy donated prizes for the winners. There were big prize baskets with bookbags, cups, cooler bags and gift cards for the top four winners, as well as small prizes like ground coffee and mugs.
As students, faculty and staff at Troy made their votes on the best chili, TUPD and first responders were making small talk, cracking jokes and letting students get to know them.
"Those of us in here were trying to speak to the students on their way out, take a casual poll, and I do think it gives everybody an opportunity to see that we're cutting up, we're joking and we're having fun,” said TUPD Chief George Beaudry. “It's not always about business, so things like this are important that we do them."
Some students seemed to be drawn to the Texas style chili with less beans or without beans, which is a change from what was seen last year. Last year, Chief Beaudry won with his chili which was more of a traditional style.
"I'm a big meat fan when it comes to chili,” said Eli Wiesman, a senior cyber security major.
“I like to have a nice, good flavor, really good seasoning, not too hot - about in the medium range.
“I don't want the heat to overtake the taste of the chili."
The final votes were counted, and the classic chili made by Chief Beaudry took the win once again.
Students meet first responderswere also given the chance to bring donations for the Trojan Pantry.
