Troy University deans scooped students into the first semester during the very first “Dipping with the Deans” event on Monday afternoon.

The event was a unique way for students to connect with the deans of Troy University and enjoy a sweet treat in a laid-back setting.

“This was a great idea, and I’m glad we’re doing it,” said Dr. Michael Thrasher, dean of communications and fine arts. “This is a great way to start off the year and have a less formal start to the academic year.

“It’s a great way to interact with students and to let them know that they’re welcome.”

Thrasher wants students to know that faculty and staff care about their students.

“I want students to know we’re here to help and support them,” Thrasher said. “I think sometimes students are really scared to see a dean, but they shouldn’t be.

“I want them to feel free to come by and talk anytime they want.”

Dipping with the Deans was a great opportunity for students to snack, chat and connect with the deans of their college.

Thrasher said one of his favorite aspects of Troy’s campus, which helped make the event possible, is the size of the school. He believes the small size of Troy creates a much greater sense of community.

Mary Grace, a freshman marketing major from Oneonta, Alabama, attended the event and shared how this event can be beneficial for students in the long run.

“Go ahead and get in the process of making those connections and getting the right foot in the door,” Grace said. “Eventually, when it comes around time for a letter of recommendation or help getting into that field, then you already know somebody at the top of the chain to help you succeed.”

Grace shared a similar thought to Thrasher regarding the intimate community of Troy.

“I feel like on bigger campuses, you may not have the option to meet your dean at a smaller event like this,” Grace said.
