The Troy campus library filled with the smell of popcorn and the silence of studying students last Thursday as Troy’s Student Government Association (SGA) held their “Pop by the Library” event.

SGA welcomed anyone who walked through the library to help themselves to popcorn and soda. The association holds an event like this each semester as a way to encourage students to use the library, reward them for their hard work in their classes, and highlight that rest and fuel are essential for earning good grades.

“The event began as a simple partnership between our two entities to encourage academic excellence and library usage, and since then it has been a huge success each semester,” said SGA President Caleb Smith, a senior risk management and insurance major from Gadsden, Alabama. “We have continued hosting this event for around two years now and see no end in sight.

“It is so much fun and always a great turnout!”

The Pop by the Library event is held as part of SGA’s Academic Excellence Week and put on by the Academic Affairs Committee.

“Overall, this week is all about celebrating our students’ academic successes whilst providing support and giving light to all the academic resources that are available on campus,” said SGA Academic Affairs committee member Bess Dunn, a sophomore risk management and insurance major from Troy. “When deciding to hold this event, our committee really considered whether or not we thought students would benefit from it.

“We thought about our past experiences and all agreed that this event, while small, could still provide a little reward for all the students hard at work in the library!”

SGA also held a free scantron handout, a seminar on AI etiquette and a resume workshop for students as part of Academic Excellence Week.

“I believe [Pop by the Library] was received very well by the students,” said SGA Academic Affairs Chair Enley McCollum, a junior accounting major from Fairhope, Alabama. “We had a lot of excitement when it came to free sodas and popcorn!

“Our committee so appreciates everyone who came and supported our events this semester, and we can’t wait to do it again in the spring!”
