Sticker competition gives students a way to show Trojan pride
Troy University students have an opportunity to show their school spirit and creativity through a sticker competition celebrating the Trojans’ rivalry game against the University of South Alabama.
The competition was developed through Troy’s Freshman Forum and Student Government Association Spirit and Traditions Committee to give students a unique way to participate in rivalry week.
“As a creative person myself, when thinking on how we can incorporate students, I came up with this idea,” said Anna Kate McMahan, a freshman business administration major from Decatur, Alabama, who serves on Freshman Forum’s Trojan Pride Committee. “I have always enjoyed designing cards and stickers for events and wanted to find a way to highlight students’ creativity while encouraging school spirit.”
Emily Kolb, a senior mathematics education major from Helena, Alabama, and chairwoman of SGA’s Spirit and Traditions Committee, said the idea was brought to her by a freshman during a joint meeting between Freshman Forum and SGA.
“I feel like it’s one of those ways that people can share their Trojan pride, but maybe not so big,” Kolb said. “Like, if you don’t love a football game or tailgating or whatever, this is another way that you can show your Trojan pride.”
The competition aims to build excitement for the rivalry game, which will be played at South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. Encouraging students to attend the away game is one reason the committee wanted to highlight the matchup.
“That rivalry runs deep,” Kolb said. “Obviously, South is a great school, but we would love to beat them every single year.”
Students can create their own sticker designs and submit them according to the instructions sent through a university email. Additional information is expected to be posted on Instagram.
Kolb said the designs should remain appropriate for a university-sponsored competition. Although the game is a rivalry, the committee wants students to keep their designs respectful toward South Alabama.
The competition gives students a chance to combine their artistic interests with their school spirit.
“Stickers and buttons are something that people love to rep when they go to games, so I think having a student-made sticker for such a big game is a great way to have fun with the creative side,” Kolb said. “Just having so many people being able to see your own design, I think that’s super cool.”
Students interested in entering the beat south sticker competition can send their submissions to sga@troy.edu. Entries must be submitted by Oct. 23.
