Step for Life

The Step for Life non-profit organization led by the Zeta Upsilon and Epsilon Xi Chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma has a solemn beginning. In 2001 a Kappa Kappa Psi brother was diagnosed with leukemia. To help with medical costs, both KKPsi and TBS started Step for Life, a step show that features Troy fraternities, sororities and other colleges around the Southeast. With the help of the proceeds from Step for Life, he was able to overcome leukemia. Unfortunately, he later passed away from complications from the treatments he received. Now that he has passed, KKPsi and TBS still hold Step for Life with the proceeds going to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. “We decided after he passed that we should keep the Step for Life event, in his memory and to raise awareness for leukemia,” said Jessica Maney, a senior biomedical science major from Shalimar, Fla., who is organizing the event this year. The proceeds also go towards a scholarship for students of the John M. Long School of Music. This year KKPsi and TBS, along with other Troy University fraternities and sororities, welcome step teams from Tuskegee University, Alabama A&M University, Bethune-Cookman University and, for the first time, local high schools Luverne High School and Northview High School. The prize for winning the Step for Life competition is $750. “This is a really great event, along with raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the event really promotes Troy University to the high school students that are participating this year,” said Maney. TBS is currently having two percentage nights this week at local fast-food restaurants, with 10 percent of the sales going towards hosting Step for Life. The first percentage night was on Tuesday, at the new Chick-Fil-A on Highway 231, and the second percentage night is on tonight at Zaxby’s of Troy. “I think that it’s great that there is an event at Troy University that really brings awareness to these awful diseases,” said Logan Vito, a freshman criminal justice major from Pinston, Ala. Step for Life is Saturday at 6 p.m. in Crosby Theater. Tickets are $5 in advance and $10 at the door. After the Step for Life step show, there will be an after party at the Troy University Recreation Center immediately following the Step for Life step show, tickets for the after party is $5 before 10 p.m. and $10 after 10 p.m. Proceeds from Step for Life will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
