Troy’s Student Government Association (SGA) is set to break new ground on Sept. 4 as it holds its first ever SGA Press Conference.
The press conference will see SGA Executive Officers deliver updates on their positions along with updates on SGA events and student initiatives around campus.
“The Student Government Association is committed to serving as a voice for the student body,” said SGA Press Secretary Kendall Ard in a press release from SGA. “This press conference reflects our ongoing effort to improve communication and transparency while highlighting the work being done campus-wide.”
SGA President Caleb Smith said holding a press conference was an idea he had from when he was first sworn into office in March of this year. At the beginning of the summer, he began discussing the idea with his fellow executive officers who gave him their full support.
“This press conference is something that we have been excited about for a while now, and we are looking forward to it coming to fruition on Sept. 4,” Smith said.
According to Smith, his main mission for this press conference is to establish an open connection between SGA and the student body through Troy University’s media.
“This conference will allow for our organization to be more fully transparent to those we represent and serve,” Smith said. “My hope is that these periodic events can also encompass a town hall, in which we will invite and take direct questions from the student body.”
SGA Executive Vice President Jayden McQueen said she hopes the press conference can give the student body a look into the organization and the work that they do. She said during her time working with Freshman Forum, whenever she talked about SGA with other students, she was met with questions surrounding what the organization does.
“I hope this press conference gives a glimpse into what our organization, in all three main branches, is doing to serve the school we love,” McQueen said.
McQueen also said she is feeling great as SGA gets closer to the press conference.
SGA’s press conferences are open to the student body, faculty and the public and will be held in the Barbara Patterson Senate Chamber in the Trojan Center.
