Troy’s National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations held their annual convocation in John Robert Lewis Hall to provide an informational browse session for students who are interested in joining an organization.

The NPHC consists of five fraternities and four sororities.

“The process of putting this convocation together has been busy but rewarding,” said Coordinator of Student Involvement and Leadership and NPHC Advisor Destyni Peoples.

“Seeing the collaboration among organizations and the impact it has on the campus community is always amazing to witness.

“It is important to continue fostering collaboration and showcasing the impact of NPHC organizations on and beyond our campus.”

Coordinating with all NPHC organizations, finalizing logistics, setting up the agenda and ensuring effective communication with everyone involved were just a few of the major tasks to put the convocation together.

Students were encouraged to wear business casual attire to the event.

“Although all of these organizations fall under NPHC, they are all so vastly different,” said NPHC President Madison McElrath, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. who is a junior psychology major from Millbrook, Alabama. “Due to this variety, I was excited for the attendees to possibly find an organization that aligns with their values.

“This is definitely an important decision for many college students, and I was excited to help them with this decision by holding this event.”

Each national organization presented its set requirements for membership. Throughout the convocation, attendees were able to ask questions and meet current organization members.

“Joining a Divine Nine (D9) organization was definitely one of the best decisions I’ve made while being in college,” said TraNiya Lashauntae, a member of The Nu Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. who is a senior social work major from Talladega, Alabama.

“By becoming a member, you are committing to making a difference through impactful community service.

“D9 organizations also focus on academic excellence while also celebrating and preserving Black culture and history, plus creating a well-rounded experience that goes beyond college years.”

Joining a D9 organization can provide students with exposure to leadership opportunities, community involvement, networking and a life-long brotherhood or sisterhood with like-minded individuals who share similar values.

“My membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has truly impacted my life for the better,” McElrath said. “I have grown so much as a person and leader since joining this pristine organization.”

At the end of the convocation, students left with the perception on why to go Greek.
