Troy University will begin two new Spanish certificate programs in the fall of 2026.
The Spanish Language Foundations Certificate is a 12-credit program designed for those with no prior Spanish knowledge to gain real-world communication skills. Additionally, the Advanced Spanish and Cultural Immersion Certificate is a 21-credit program for those with intermediate Spanish proficiency.
“The Spanish certificate program is designed for students across all majors who want to develop practical language skills and cultural awareness that complement their primary field of study,” said Dr. Kelly Suero, chair and associate professor of Spanish.
According to Suero, the certificates are beneficial in a plethora of fields, including business, communications, healthcare, education, social work and criminal justice.
“The 12-credit track introduces core language skills, while the 21-credit track is intended for students who wish to build on that foundation and pursue more advanced language study and cultural exploration,” Suero said.
This program creates an accessible pathway to Spanish language skills that can be applied in day-to-day life.
“Learning another language can enhance communication skills, cognitive abilities and career opportunities in a global society and can help individuals with intercultural competence and adaptability,” said Dr. Johanna Alberich, associate professor of Spanish. “Learning Spanish is not just about acquiring a new language, it is also about fostering a deeper understanding of different cultures, and sometimes even students’ own culture.”
Lecturer of Spanish Rachel Fournier followed with a similar sentiment.
“Whether in medicine, business or social services, students will be able to apply their Spanish skills to work with Spanish speakers in many capacities,” Fournier said. “They can help fill the language gap that helps Spanish speakers gain access to important services.”
In addition to the cultural and communication benefits, speaking a second language can enhance a resume and create meaningful opportunities for students.
“Having basic knowledge of Spanish can set you apart from other job applicants,” Alberich said. “It can help unlock job opportunities in the United States or in one of the many Spanish speaking countries.”
“Our department offers a wide variety of Spanish courses, both in person and online, that students can take to cater to their needs and future career,” Alberich said. “We have several short-term study abroad opportunities, some very affordable, that focus on learning Spanish abroad.”
Fournier said when learning Spanish, start with the basics and take time to practice each day. According to Fournier, learning a language is a process.
Suero said beginning that process sooner is better, but not required.
“Students can begin at any point, but starting earlier allows for greater flexibility and deeper skill development over time,” Suero said. “The program is intentionally designed to be accessible even to those who discover it later in their academic journey.”
These certificates will be available beginning in fall of 2026. For further questions, students may contact Dr. Kelly Suero at ksuero@troy.edu.
