New senators elected to SGA

The Student Government Association held elections on Wednesday, Jan. 20, to fill seven vacant senator seats.

Carly Smith was elected to represent the College of Communication and Fine Arts, and Rebekah Holk will represent Sorority Hill.

Sofi Gelabert, Sagar Patel, Meagan Self, Claire Gunter and Taylor McKnight were elected as senators at large.

SGA also passed a “Lighting in Smith Hall parking lot” resolution, during its meeting on Tuesday night, brought forward by SGA senator Laken Berry, a sophomore secondary education major from Athens.

According to Berry, the need for additional lighting is a question of security, because with poor lighting, “students and faculty are subjected to dangerous situations.”

“Once it (the resolution) passes, people think it has to happen, but it’s just us saying this is what we need, this is what we want to happen as students, so we take it (the resolution) to the people who can get it done on campus,” Berry said.

The SGA also passed the constitutions of the Rotary Club and Business Law Club.

Freshman Forum directors Ashli Morris, a sophomore broadcast journalism major from Athens, and Meredith Durden, a sophomore accounting major from Montgomery, invited everyone to attend the group’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 21, at 6 p.m. in the Sorrell Chapel.

The memorial ceremony will include a speech by a guest speaker and several short speeches from various student leaders on campus on the impact of King’s work on their lives.

At the end, one of the Freshman Forum members will read excerpts from King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

“It will be really powerful,” Morris said. “I think it will be great.”

Freshman Forum directors also encouraged all students to attend the “Hoopcoming” rally for the men’s and women’s basketball game against the University of South Alabama on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
