Troy University has reached a new benchmark with the launch of its fourth doctoral program, the doctorate in criminology.

The new doctorate boosts the university to level four, the highest classification granted by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).  SACSCOC bases its rankings on the highest degree an institution offers. \

With Troy now having four doctoral programs, the university has secured the highest ranking. In a Troy Today article, Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. expressed his pride for the university’s new status.

“From our beginnings as a teacher’s college to our recognition today as a doctoral institution at the highest level, Troy University’s story is one of steady growth and success,” Hawkins said. “Achieving level four recognition affirms the hard work of our faculty and staff, the vision of our leadership team, and the dedication of our students and alumni.

“It is a milestone that not only reflects how far we have come but also paves the way for even greater achievements in the years ahead.”

Associate Provost for Academics Dr. Mary Anne Templeton credited faculty with helping the university reach this point.

“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our faculty, whose vision and innovation have made this achievement possible,” Templeton said in a Troy Today article. “Their willingness to develop new doctoral programs and to push the boundaries of what we offer has positioned Troy University among the top institutions in the nation.”

The latest recognition follows other recent advancements. Earlier this year, the university received doctoral classification in the 2025 Carnegie Institutional framework and was designated a Carnegie research university.

The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education recognizes universities on the scale of R1, R2 and R3. Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Kerry Palmer said the university is working toward even higher recognition.

“This recognition from the SACSCOC is another important step in Troy University’s journey,” Palmer said in a Troy Today article. “Our next goal is to continue expanding our research enterprise and to position Troy for the next level of Carnegie classification.

“We are committed to fostering a culture of discovery and innovation that will not only enhance our academic reputation but also make a lasting impact on the communities we serve.”

With the new doctoral program established, Troy is one step closer to its goal of being an R2 research institution.
