Miss Troy University announced her partnership with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Associates, LLC this semester. ABA Associates, LLC is a clinic-based therapy service that functions to strengthen functional communication, daily living and social skills for individuals with autism.

Anna Grace Tucker, a junior business major from Huntsville, Alabama, recently visited the location in Troy, Alabama, and read to the children who were in attendance.

“It means a lot to me to be able to help others, especially children who are developing important communication and social skills,” Tucker said. “Partnering with ABA Associates, LLC gives me the opportunity to serve in a hands-on way, grow professionally and make a positive impact in the lives of kids and their families this semester.”

Tucker said this association aligns closely with what her community service initiative stands for as both focus on empowering individuals to find confidence in their voice. Her community service initiative, “Say It Out Loud,” focuses on shedding light on speech disorders since she has apraxia, a speech-sound disorder that makes it hard to articulate words.

“Growing up with a speech disorder, I often felt unheard, which inspired me to create an initiative that encourages people to speak up, communicate effectively and feel confident doing so,” Tucker said. “Partnering with ABA Associates, LLC allows me to support others in developing verbal and communication skills so they feel seen, heard and able to succeed.”

Sarah Jane Houston, a senior psychology major from Albany, Georgia, who is also a former Miss Troy, recently became a registered behavior technician (RBT) through ABA.

Houston said her biggest takeaway has been learning to not take life too seriously, the importance of patience and how meaningful it is to celebrate every win, no matter how small.

“Working in ABA was never something I expected to have the opportunity to do, but it has been incredibly rewarding,” Houston said. “I’ve always had a passion for empowering others, especially youth, and helping people reach their full potential.

“It has also always been a dream of mine to work with children, so this experience has truly been everything I never knew I needed.”

Looking ahead, Tucker is looking forward to seeing the kids grow and improve their skills throughout this partnership.

“I also look forward to learning alongside them, gaining new experiences and expanding my own knowledge while making a meaningful impact,” Tucker said. “I’m excited to support this association through fundraising and donations, while continuing to raise awareness for the important work they do.

“I look forward to helping create opportunities that allow more individuals and families to benefit from their services.”

Tucker continues to have support from her family and friends as she pursues her commitments.

“I absolutely love this partnership,” Houston said. “Anna Grace grew up with a speech impediment and has attended speech therapy throughout her life, so representation and relatable role models are so important, especially for children, and I think she is the perfect example of that.

“I am incredibly proud of my Miss Troy University sister for keeping the legacy strong and pursuing the things she is passionate about. I support her fully in all her endeavors and wish her nothing but success.”
