The Troy men’s golf team finished up The Intercollegiate at The Grove Club and took home second place on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
The team started off Sunday, Oct. 26, with the sixth best round in program history with 279. The Trojans were only three shots off the previous 2009 and 2005 record of 276.
Three of the Trojans were in the individual top five on Sunday. Seniors Tolver Dozier and Jake Tucker were tied for second after the first day. Teammate sophomore Luke Moser took fourth place.
Tucker, Moser, and senior Phillip Brennan all had an eagle and the team finished the first day with a total of 19 birdies.
“I’m really proud of what the guys accomplished today, but we still have a lot of work to do and need to be the low team the next two days,” head coach Matt Terry said. “They have been working really hard during practice, and it is nice to see their hard work pay off.”
On Monday, Oct. 27, the Trojans were leading the pack by a four-stroke lead, shooting a 304. The team struggled more in the second round, after GRU Augusta cut into Troy’s Sunday 10-stroke lead.
Tucker managed to hang on in the top five in fourth place, while Dozier tied for ninth place. Moser and sophomore Jared Bettcher tied in 11th place. Bettcher had a 1-over 73 after snagging and eagle and three birdies on Monday.
In the final round, Troy shot a 299, allowing Ohio State to steal the win with a round of 281. Troy managed to beat GRU Augusta out of second place by a mere three shots, thanks to Brennan shooting under three on the last three holes.
Bettcher was the only Trojan to finish in the top five, ending tied in fifth with a total of 219 for the tournament. Dozier took 14th shooting a 222 and Moser tied for 15th shooting 223.
Tucker and Brennan finished up The Intercollegiate, tied for 18th and tied for 28th, respectively. The team collected a total of six eagles during the tournament and tied with Ohio State for most birdies with 42.
The men’s golf team finished up the fall season with a 37-9 record. Troy will start up the spring golf season in Humble, Texas at the Bayou City Classic on Feb. 20-22.
