Meet your SGA executive candidates: VPLA

Vice President of Legislative Affairs

Margaret White, a sophomore elementary education major from Madison, said parliamentary procedure, the rules and order that SGA meetings follow, is something she wants more students to experience.

White said that parliamentary procedure allows an organized time for students or faculty members to attend meetings and to express their thoughts about Troy or to introduce new ideas.

“I think it is so cool and it really gives order to the meetings,” White said.

“It gives the voice not only to the students, but also to the different committees. It’s very fair and just.”

If White is elected as vice president of legislative affairs, she said she plans to encourage student involvement at SGA meetings.

“SGA can sometimes get a little stuffy and people think, ‘Oh, I can’t go to SGA meetings,’ but you can, and we want you to and we welcome you to,” White said.

White served as secretary of Freshman Forum and currently serves as SGA representative for the College of Education.

Andrew Dearing, a sophomore criminal justice major from Montgomery, said he wants to make practical change happen.

“I want to see practical progress made between Trojans and be able to make practical changes for the university that comes from the students,” Dearing said.

Dearing has served on SGA for two years. His freshman year, he represented Trojan Village and he currently serves as the representative for the College of Arts and Sciences and also as the constitution and rules committee head.

“I plan to make a stronger connection between the student body and the SGA who serve as representatives of our student body,” he said. “In doing so, I want to bridge the gap between students and administration to bring us closer together.”

Dearing said he aims to extend Trojan Dining hours and to hear students’ voices more effectively.

“I would like to pass resolutions and bills that are practical and make Troy better,” Dearing said.

During the 2015-16 school year, Dearing’s committee passed a Fraternity Row parking resolution in addition to several resolutions thanking the administration for working alongside SGA.
