Nothing is scarier than art students. . . when they make a haunted house. That's exactly what the Department of Art and Design did last week.
Students were beckoned into a transformed version of Malone Hall, where 35 student volunteers laid in wait to scare them.
Assistant Administrator of Art and Design Malory Magrath said the haunted house was entirely student-led.
“We let everybody vote on the ideas we came up with,” Magrath said. “We let everyone share any ideas they had.
“We wanted the students to have as much fun with it as they could.”
According to Magrath, the haunted house took six weeks to plan. Magrath also said decorating Malone Hall took over a day.
Four classrooms became filled with nightmares. Clowns, creepy cabin, dolls and morgue madness awaited students. Some said the morgue room was the scariest of all.
“I felt like I was in a horror movie,” said Aniyah Washington, an early childhood education major who is from Niceville, Florida. “They are covered in blood, and all they did was smile at me.
“It also felt like they were trying to grab me; it was super creepy.”
Macgrath said there was a lot of action going on right in front of attendees’ faces.
Emmerick Hughes, a resident of Goshen, Alabama who attended the haunted house, was one of the first people to go through the haunted house. Hughes says he’s been a big fan of haunted houses for quite some time.
Hughes shared what the most memorable moment of his experience was.
“In one of the rooms, I saw a lady twist her head around,” Hughes said. “It was great; I loved it.
“It was super weird having a ton of people crawl around on the floor trying to grab me, too.”
After surviving the haunted house, attendees could feast on Halloween-themed refreshments provided by the Department of Art and Design. Attendees also had the option to visit each room a second time.
For those who missed the haunted house, the department plans to hold another one next October. To learn when details are announced, visit @troy_art_and_design on Instagram.
