Troy Greek organizations are gearing up to compete in this year’s Greek Week games and performances.
This series of events is held every spring to showcase the talents and creative minds of those in the university’s Greek organizations.
“Greek Week brings together students from different councils and organizations who may not always interact and it creates shared experiences,” said Korrie Williamson, associate dean of student services and this year’s Greek Week advisor. “I especially enjoy watching the collaboration and leadership development that naturally emerge.
“The energy is high, but the support students show one another is what makes it meaningful.”
Greek Week teams were announced in early February, and from there the teams will begin rehearsing a dance, a skit and begin team-building exercises which they will apply to the competitive games like dodgeball, kick ball, tug-of-war and build-a-boat.
This year's theme will be Greeks on Holiday, where each team will be assigned a different holiday.
“Working behind the scenes for Greek Week is actually really fun because you get to help plan big events, work closely with other chapters and see everything come together,” said Chandler Mayo, a senior communications major from Alabaster, Alabama, and Greek Week committee member. “Even though it takes effort, being part of what makes the whole week happen is a great feeling.”
One of the biggest focuses of Greek Week is the many philanthropies each organization is associated with. Not only is this time spent to inform the student body on each philanthropy, but Quarter Wars also challenges each organization to raise the most money that is later donated.
“Each year, we try to bring something bigger and better than we did the year before,” said Charlee Kirkland, a junior dance major from Clanton, Alabama.
Greek Week is not only for those in Greek organizations, but also those who are not affiliated. The Greek Week dance is open to all students who would like to attend, and Quarter Wars is a way for students to participate and support a philanthropy.
“The majority of the friends I have made have been from attending a Greek Week event or working behind the scenes to prepare for a Greek Week activity,” Kirkland said.
