The Hall School of Journalism’s Lambda Pi Eta honor society will hold a one-time national panel event this Friday in Wallace Hall.
This panel event allows students to discuss some of their most sought-after questions with professionals from around the country working in several areas of journalism and public relations (PR).
“The panel offers a good range of perspectives,” said Lambda Pi Eta advisor Dr. Shari Hoppin, an associate professor of journalism and communication studies. “You have a PR director who understands high‑stakes messaging, a digital strategist who lives in the fast‑moving world of online content, a federal project manager who can speak to communication in public service and a true‑crime podcaster with deep investigative experience.
“A panel like this can help students get a clearer sense of what journalism and communication careers look like. It’s also an opportunity to hear practical advice about journalism and communication industries from people who are actively shaping them.”
The panel consists of several different career backgrounds including social strategies, digital content creation, project management, podcasting and investigative journalism.
Guest speakers include Marcus Liem from New York City; Elizabeth Gentry from Houston, Texas; Molly Stoltz from St. Petersburg, Florida and Claire St. Amant from Waco, Texas.
“[I look forward to] learning from the people who are in the industry themselves, learning from people who have been in your shoes and how they are applying it to everyday life and their everyday career,” said Layla Reynolds, a senior communication major from Oxford, Alabama.
This is a one-time opportunity for those interested as this is not a regularly held event at the university. These panelists have been chosen by students and faculty members that serve on the Lambda Pi Eta national advisory board.
“It really doesn't matter what you want to do in the communication field, this is a perfect networking opportunity for you,” said Lambda Pi Eta President Simon Brown, a senior broadcast journalism major from Hoover, Alabama. “You very well may end up walking away with a connection that you could use when it's time to graduate,” Brown said.
This event is open to all who are interested and will be held in Wallace Hall room 106 at 2 p.m. The event can also be accessed via Zoom.
