Banned Books Week is an annual event that highlights the importance of free access to information. This year’s theme is “Censorship is so 1984,” referencing George Orwell’s banned novel “1984,” which features anti-authoritarian themes.

Banned Books Week began in 1982 in response to a variety of books being banned from public schools and libraries. The event is held in the last week of September or the first full week of October.

The event brings together teachers, librarians, authors, publishers and readers alike to protest censorship and support the freedom to express ideas. According to the American Library Association, in 2024 821 attempts were made to challenge books and 72% of those attempts came from pressure groups and government entities.

Each year, the American Library Association compiles a list of the most challenged books from the previous year. In 2024, the top 10 challenged books featured books that featured LGBTQIA+ characters or books that tackled racial injustice.

In the past, Troy University Libraries held events for Banned Books Week, highlighting some of the most notorious banned books such as “Lord of the Flies” and “A Handmaid’s Tale.” Libraries, schools and other nonprofit organizations are encouraged by the American Library Association to participate in Banned Books Week.
