The freshman 15 is not an uncommon term, and many students may struggle to stay healthy during their time in college.
Troy has many opportunities for students to feel better and have fun while doing so.
“The gym setting is something that's a little overwhelming and intimidating for most people,” said Fitness and Wellness Coordinator Wes Taylor. “We offer personal training services where you're coming in [and] you're working with a trainer.
“You've got somebody with you, teaching you, educating you, showing you the way to help build your confidence and comfortability being in a gym setting.”
Taylor serves as one of the trainers alongside Georgia Bagdonas, a sophomore business major from Huntsville, Alabama.
“Troy University rec center offers a ton of different ways for students to stay in shape while also having fun,” Bagdonas said. “We offer personal training, fitness classes, intramural sports and even open basketball, volleyball and pickleball courts for the majority of the day.”
Bagdonas is also a class instructor for the Rec’s spin classes. She encouraged students to come enjoy some upbeat music and cycle with her when she teaches on Mondays and Wednesdays at 3:30.
There are also classes available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 a.m.
“I would suggest students who may have busy schedules to come and take one of our 30-minute fitness classes,” Bagdonas said. “They’re quick, effective and make you feel energized to take on the rest of your day.”
The Rec Center is a great place to exercise and meet new people for some, but it’s not the only way for students to improve their health. Caydin McAlpine, a sophomore nursing major from Hayden, Alabama, said there are lots of little healthy habits that busy students can add to their daily routines.
“If you can't work out for a long period of time, then walk around the track for 15 minutes,” McAlpine said. “Go outside.
“Don't stay in your dorm all day, and if you're not involved, get involved on campus.”
Bagdonas recommended drinking more water and eating more whole foods. Taylor recommended building time to work out into your schedule and taking walks after meals.
Taylor, Bagdonas and McAlpine all wanted students to know that the Rec Center staff is here to help.
