Troy University Honors Global Scholars Program is holding its Speaker Insight Series for students. The purpose of the series is to help students learn how to take what they learn at Troy out into the world.
“The Speaker Insight Series is a signature initiative of the University Honors Global Scholars Program designed to bring distinguished thinkers, leaders and changemakers to campus,” said Dr. Priya Menon, the head of the honors program. “Each session invites students to engage in meaningful conversations that connect classroom learning to global, professional and community contexts.”
While the series is held by the honors program, all Troy students are invited to attend.
“I would highly encourage students to attend, because I don’t think they realize just how much these speakers pour into their work to better the communities they serve and the passions they hold for their chosen vocations,” said Noah Hadwin, a freshman political science major from Guntersville, Alabama.
Students say it helps them learn from professionals in their communities and offers mentors they can look up to. Organizers say there are other benefits for the students who choose to attend.
“The series helps students broaden their perspectives, learn directly from accomplished professionals, and explore how their own studies and goals connect to larger global and local challenges,” Menon said. “It also gives them an opportunity to build confidence in dialogue, networking and intellectual exchange beyond the classroom.”
For those unsure of attending, students who are planning to go offer this advice.
“Even if the topic doesn't directly pertain to your major or what you're interested in, the speakers offer great insights into other fields and areas,” said Eliana Renneke, a freshman political science major from Henderson, Minnesota. “There is always something to learn that can apply to you and your future.”
The series hopes to speak to students of all majors as the lineup of speakers comes from all different walks of life.
“This year’s lineup includes scholars, artists and professionals whose work aligns with the Honors Global Scholars’ focus on leadership, global citizenship and community impact,” Menon said. “Speakers represent a range of fields—from civic leadership, public policy, global arts, history and culture to business innovation and environmental advocacy.”
To skeptics, this may just seem like a series of lectures; Menon feels the speakers offer more than any lecture.
“The Insight Series is more than a lecture,” Menon said. “It’s an invitation to connect ideas with action. I encourage all students to take advantage of these sessions, meet the speakers, and let these experiences inspire their own journeys as global scholars and leaders.”
Students who want to attend can contact the honors office, as the series is expected to start soon with discussions scheduled biweekly throughout the rest of the semester.
