Fraternity to host “Turkey Trot”

Delta Kappa Epsilon will host a charity run this Saturday, Nov. 15, to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. The event, named “Troy Trojan Turkey Trot,” will be a 5K road run.

The organization works with the vision, according to its website: ” A world where everyone has a decent place to live.” Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that builds houses for families who have lost their homes because of natural disasters, wars or difficult financial situations.

Habitat for Humanity is DKE’s philanthropy, which they have different fundraisers every year for. This year, DKE is selling Turkey Trot tickets for $20. The funds collected will be used in building houses with Habitat for Humanity for local people who have had their houses damaged or are financially unable to reconstruct or rebuild their houses.

Andrew Mckelvie, a junior global business major and brother of Delta Kappa Epsilon, said that they have an alumnus who has worked with the organization in the past, making Habitat for Humanity something close to the fraternity.

“The person that we have coordinating this is one of our alumnus, who has done fourteen different kinds of such events,” Mckelvie said.

Mckelvie also said that it is an organization that brings the community together. “It will help make the adults and the students from the university work together.”

The Turkey Trot will begin at 7.30 a.m. and will last until 9.30 a.m. on Saturday. The run will begin and end at Elm Street Gym across from Sorority Hill.

“The target in the long run is the idea ‘Go with the race’, which probably won’t happen this year,” Mckelvie said. “Our goal is to get it big enough to where we can have the race and the fundraisers in a week and at the end of the week we raise enough money to actually build houses the next week.”

In the event on Saturday, the brothers of DKE are expecting around 30-40 % participation of the university students. The brothers have placed flyers all around campus to encourage people to participate in this altruistic event.

“We’d love the support from students,” Mckelvie said. “If anybody would like to ask any questions about running in the race or anything else, they can contact any DKE brother or the Habitat for Humanity club here at Troy.”
