Footwork and Fizz — more like dirty dancing with a few dirty Dr. Peppers

After a week filled with elections and voting, Troy's Student Government Association (SGA) invited students to practice their dance moves with a fun drink in hand. The air was full of laughter, fizz and fun as SGA brought students together for Footwork and Fizz last Thursday night.

Students were able to line dance with their custom drinks in hand. Whether it was a Shirley Temple or a dirty Dr. Pepper, students were still getting down and dancing.

“My favorite part about being here tonight is getting down on the dance floor and hitting line dances no doubt,” said Isaac Smitherman, a freshman political science major from Locus Fort, Alabama. "I love it, even if I don't know one, someone knows one, and you can always learn from them, so it's a good time."

Dances ranged from "Boots on the Ground" to "Wobble" and a little bit of everything in between.

It was a way for students to get out of their dorms and connect with each other, regardless of their dance skills.

"Well, I am really uncoordinated, so it's really funny, because I make a joke out of it the whole time, and it makes everyone crack up," said Faith Crawley, a junior K-6 collaborative education major from Brantley, Alabama. “It just breaks the ice and makes it a lot easier to talk to people you haven't talked to before."

As the night went on, the dance floor got more crowded. More students were able to meet their SGA officers, make new friends and have a good time.

“We're all in SGA, so we have a ton of senators and freshman forum delegates here,” said Emma Claire Kirchharr, a sophomore financial economics major from Uriah, Alabama.

“These are people that advocate for their student needs and things that they want, so it's a way for them to know that we are students as well.

“They can meet with us and talk with us through a fun event like line dancing."

SGA has other events coming up as well where students can meet members. Looking ahead, one of those events will be academic excellence week where students can learn about healthy study habits.
