Football players look forward to the big game

For some, homecoming is their favorite part of football season. It’s a rare opportunity to combine pageantry and tradition with the brutality of football.

Off the field there are students, alumni and community members enjoying the festivities. On the field, men are forced to ignore the spectacle and prepare for war.

“It’s fun seeing all the students getting excited for it – we usually have a pretty good showing,” junior offensive lineman Eli Russ said.

To everyone involved, this game just means more. Regardless of who the opponent is, the homecoming game is circled on the schedule. Nobody wants to lose on homecoming.

“We need to come out and play well for our homecoming crowd at Troy University,” head coach Gerad Parker said. “That’s our directive and motive.”This year homecoming has a little more weight on it, as it comes on the heels of an awkward month. The team’s last home game was Thursday, Oct. 3 when Texas State visited Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“I can’t wait to be back at The Vet,” said senior linebacker Brendan Jackson. “I love everything we do at home games.

“I’m glad it’s Homecoming, because I know everyone will come out, and we’ll have former players – I just can’t wait to put on a show for them.”

Recently, Troy has had success on homecoming, with their last homecoming loss coming at the hands of Louisiana in 2021. The last two years saw success and a Sun Belt Conference Championship.

Prior to kickoff, events for all ages will be held both on and off campus. Activities include a banner competition and the annual homecoming parade.

As part of the festivities, there will be a new king and queen named as well as Mr. and Mrs. Trojan Pride. This year also serves as T-Roy’s 40th birthday.

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. Ticket specials are available – student guest tickets are $5 until Nov. 1. There is also a four-ticket bundle for $50 in section 116 or 118 and alot five parking pass.
