Anthropology club Halloween movie night

Getting in spirit for the season, the anthropology club had an extra spooky Halloween movie night; some members even dressed up for the occasion.

The club watched “As Above So Below,” a horror movie that follows a woman named Scarlett and her group as they travel into the catacombs under Paris. Anthropology studies humanity, human biology, cultures and societies past and present. While the movie focuses a bit more on archeology, members agree that as far as horror anthropology movies go, this was the best choice for the club.

"The main character is an archeologist so obviously archeology and anthropology already have overlap,” said Weezie Brand, a psychology major. “I think it's fun for people in the anthropology club and department who do study archeology to be able to sit down and watch a cheesy horror movie that has something that they're doing in it."

Several members express their appreciation for movie nights, and they have become a tradition in the anthropology club. From Minecraft documentaries, to horror movies, the anthropology club is open to a multitude of suggestions. As long as there is at least one way to tie it back to anthropology.

"Anthropology club movie night is very special, it's the easiest way we can get together as a group,” said Marlee Brand, president of the Anthropology Club and a senior anthropology major from Blakely, Georgia. “Most of us come together on Thursday or Friday, sit down and watch something either in our field or surrounding what we're talking about."

Members are encouraged to bring along any friends they want to, whether they are interested in joining the club or not. The point of their movie nights is for everyone to have a good time.

"I think they're the best way to watch a movie, because I hate picking movies, I hate going to the movie theaters because it's expensive, but if I come here not only can you watch it, you can enjoy it with your friends, you can bring whoever you want,” Brand said. “It's not like you're just sitting and watching a movie, you’re experiencing something.”
