Troy University Police Department (TUPD) headquarters are officially back on campus grounds after nearly five years.

This summer, TUPD relocated to the Collegeview Building on Pell Avenue. Collegeview used to be home to Troy's nursing department before the creation of Jones Hall earlier this spring.

For many years, TUPD was based on the first floor of Hamil Hall, a former residence hall. Demolition in 2021 forced the department to relocate.

“When we moved out of Hamil Hall back in 2021, we knew that that was a temporary move over to Park Street,” said TUPD Chief George Beaudry. “Temporary sometimes turns into a little longer than expected, and it did.

“It took us about four years, but we were waiting for the construction to finish for the nursing building. The plan was always to come here.

“We had some construction here that we needed to do. We did a little bit of painting, a little bit of us getting it ready for us to move in.”

In addition to the new facility, TUPD now has a special space for victims called “the soft room.”

“The soft room, in essence, is a really comfortable environment,” Beaudry said. “When we have victims of crime that come in, we have a couch for them to sit down and relax.

“We've got a refrigerator for them with refreshments. We've got artwork hanging on the walls, and the floor is also carpeted.

In the past, when situations like this happened, we used to have to sit in a break room. It works out better for all of us.”

Freshman chemistry education major Kelvin Ardis, who is from Dothan, Alabama, thinks TUPD’s new location will improve student’s safety.

“It feels pretty good knowing that the police are just one call away,” Ardis said. “It will be quicker for them to respond to emergencies.

“It’s good that they’re so close to the dorms, too.”

Students also shared how they think the new location will deter crime on Troy’s campus.

“I think the new location is going to scare away a lot of suspicious activity,” said Gunner Tucker, a freshman exercise physiology major from Lockesburg, Alabama. “Especially people trying to maybe rob cars.”

With headquarters now at the Collegeview Building, TUPD hopes the move improves accessibility for students and enhances support for victims.

The full address of the TUPD’s new location is 400 Pell Avenue, Troy, AL, 36082.
