Troy’s Welcome Week Committee and Troy Dining banded together for PJs and Pancakes, an event where breakfast was served for dinner at the dining hall last Sunday night. A DJ was also brought in to play music, and there was line dancing throughout the evening.
PJs and Pancakes was organized by two Welcome Week Committees: Events Crew and Public Relations.
“This event is designed to get people out of their dorm rooms,” said Caden Walker, a sophomore broadcast journalism major from Prattville, Alabama, who is on the public relations committee for Welcome Week. “It’s mostly for freshmen to get to know anyone they’ve seen, maybe at IMPACT, so that we can enjoy Troy together.”
Students were drawn in by friends, the music and the food.

“I like these events because they help us get to know one another and to meet people that we wouldn’t normally meet,” said Laney Hinton, a sophomore nursing major from Hoover, Alabama.
The spread included pancakes, sausage, eggs and breakfast potatoes for the main course. Desserts included various cookies, cinnamon rolls and muffins.
“We partnered with Troy Dining for this event,” said Welcome Week Co-Director Abby Gilliland, who is a junior hospitality and tourism major from Alexander City, Alabama. “They brought all the food and the DJ. “The dining hall is the perfect place to have ‘PJs and Pancakes,’ especially for new freshmen. They can get to know it.”
PJs and Pancakes is part of Welcome Week, which is a two-week-long celebration of the beginning of the semester. This year’s Welcome Week started Aug. 9 and ends Aug. 24. Different events are put on by Troy Welcome Week’s various committees.
“Welcome Week is a way for students to have a way to be more familiar with Troy, go to events and meet new people,” Gilliland said. “Events like these are a chance to eat good food, get out of the dorm room and have a good time.”
“Each different committee in Welcome Week is to cover different events, and they all make sure we have a different spread of students that are covering each event, including our directors who guide us throughout the week,” said Zara Smith, a senior political science and homeland security major from Bradenton, Florida. She is also the committee chair for the events crew.

Any student can apply to join the Welcome Week Committee for the upcoming semesters.
“There’s an application process that will come out where applications get posted on our social media, and then it’s an easy application process,” Smith said. “They’re very inclusive on allowing any student that wants to join, giving everyone an equal opportunity.”
