Welcome Week Comittee holds FDOC fashion show on the quad

Students look forward to the first day of school for many reasons. Reconnecting with friends, gaining new experiences and, most importantly, the first day of school fit check. This year, Welcome Week included the first day of class fashion show and photos, so students could put their style to the test.

"On the first day of school, you show up, and you put on your best outfit usually, so we want to represent that and show off the outfits that people came and brought," said Welcome Week committee member Omari Brown, a junior accounting major from Auburn, Alabama. "We have people come and take their pictures, post it on Instagram, and people vote on who has the best outfit. The people can win a gift card and a T-shirt."

While the gift card and shirt were motivators for many students to enter the competition, some students used the show as an excuse to show off their signature styles and confidence.

"My style, honestly, it varies," said participant Tahleek Shepard, a senior psychology major from Mobile, Alabama. "I have different types of styles, and I just like putting on clothes, to be honest.

"What I like to show is just dress how you want to dress, just be yourself, be expressive and love it."

Along with the fashion show, students and faculty documentedtheir first day of class with pictures from a photo booth. They were then able to receive the picture through text message.

Welcome Week committee members expressed the importance of self-confidence and getting out of their comfort zones.

"I think it’s important for students to come to the fashion show because they get to express themselves; they get to find creativity in their clothing," said Welcome Week committee member Zavier Long, a sophomore nursing major from Hoover, Alabama. "They get to not only find a spot here on campus within activities but also express themselves within their clothing here and get out of their comfort zone."

Troy welcome events concluded Aug. 15. However, there will be more events throughout the school year with other campus organizations, including the Student Government Association, University Activities Council and more. Students are encouraged to participate and meet new people in the Troy community.
