Pradyot SharmaWesley Kirchharr “Yeah, I love the Mountain people,” said Troy student Jed Cleetus, a freshman undeclared major from Enterprise as he blasted John Denver music on his speakers. Cleetus was referring to the West Virginia Mountaineer football program as he was attempting to memorize Denver’s 1971 classic hit, “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” a ballad for the fandom of West Virginia football fans. Cleetus said that he grew up supporting the West Virginia football team and had always been supportive of their program. “They are in the Big Ten, aren’t they?” Cleetus asked before another student whispered to him that it was actually the Big 12 conference. “I always thought the song referred to the country roads in Alabama,” said Jake Joseph, a freshman communication major from Andalusia. “Apparently, West Virginia is what he was talking about.” Cleetus and Joseph both maintain that there is no connection between their following of the Mountaineers’ program and the appointment of former Troy head coach Neal Brown as their new head football coach. Joseph said that he found out on Wednesday that John Denver was a famous country singer and not, as he previously believed, West Virginia’s former football coach.
