Students danced the night away at the first event of the semester for the University Activities Council (UAC): a silent disco. The event was held last Wednesday in the Trojan Center Ballrooms.

With a valid student ID, students were able to grab a pair of special headphones and tune into their DJ of choice.

“Tonight is one of our first major events,” said Jamie Parker, a junior nursing major from Millbrook, Alabama, who serves as president of UAC. “Students can come and have fun, and it gives them something to look forward to every Wednesday.

“Silent disco is a great way to start off the activities on campus. We always get a good turnout.”

Students dance to a variety of music options during Silent Disco in the Trojan Center Ballrooms.

As well as music, UAC offered free food to students who attended. A spread of pizza and drinks were available for students to grab while listening to music.

UAC holds events every week on Wednesdays. Usually, these events encourage getting out of the dorms or apartments and meeting others with similar interests. UAC has held many campus events in the past, such as silent discos, movie nights and casino nights.

Every event has free food and drinks.

“These events give students a chance to come out and meet each other,” said Tayjo Oppong, a senior sports management major from Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, who serves as the vice president of UAC. “Freshmen are coming from all different places, and they don’t know anyone.

“Events like these serve as a way to bond with each other. UAC gives students a chance to come out and relax. It gives an opportunity to take the edge off if someone has something stressing them.”

“I come to almost all the UAC events,” said Lydia Reno, a junior collaborative education major from Gulf Shores, Alabama. “They’re my absolute favorite.”

When asked about her favorite kind of event, Reno said that she likes the silent discos the most.

“I love being about to connect with different people,” Reno said. “It’s fun to bring out friends who you don’t go out with often.

“It’s a good event to get people out of their comfort zone.”

UAC holds meetings every Monday at 5 p.m. in the Trojan Center, room 119. To keep up to date with UAC events, follow @troyuac on Instagram.
