People from around the community gathered at the Troy City Recreation for a Halloween Spooky Movie night held by Truly Chosen. This is one of the many events put on by the organization to help bring community members together.

Truly Chosen is an organization with a mission to promote inclusivity within the community, specifically working with the disabled community. Themembers aim to have an event once a month ranging from hands-on activities, serving the community or events where people can simply gather and have a fun night.

“Everybody views the world in different ways,” said Ella Cutts, a junior psychology major from Enterprise, Alabama. “I think we try to conform people to fit a certain mold, but we just need to change our ways of thinking to be more inclusive and accepting of others.”

Snacks and coloring sheets were provided as spooky movies played on a projector. Movies such as “Hotel Transylvania,” “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” and “Casper” were some of the films Truly Chosen had planned for the evening.

While the organization has goals of having more people attend its events, there are members of the disabled community who consistently attend. Members said that it is rewarding to them.

“There are a few people of the community that come every time because they look forward to it,” said Alexa Travis, a junior human services major from Kent, Georgia. “They’re always here.

“Other than that, it’s just a bunch of people who want to come and hang out.”

Attendees and relatives have told members of Truly Chosen the events are safe places for them, and they are excited about it every month.

Truly Chosen is a newer organization to Troy’s campus, only becoming an official club this year. However, they have been serving the disabled community for a few years, expressing it’s more than just something that looks good on a resume.

“It’s really important to get involved in something that you care about and to make other people feel the same,” said Gracen Murphy, a junior nursing major from Prattville, Alabama. “It’s something that matters and something that’s going to have an impact on somebody else’s life.”

“It’s so important, including everyone in the community,” Travis said. “Everybody is one and the same in the Lord’s Eyes.”

There are no major or GPA requirements to partake in Truly Chosen. Truly Chosen has events at Troy Parks and Recreation once a month. For information on future events, follow its Instagram account @trulychosen__.
