An array of beads was scattered across the lab table in the Math and Science room 212 last Thursday for a bracelet making night. Students from the Troy Beta Beta Beta (Tri Beta) chapter, a biological honor society, made colorful and creative bracelets to sell for a future fundraiser.
There was a mix of lettered and colored bead with the students being able to decide how they wanted the bracelets to look. Some were Earth Day themed, some had words and others were just colors.
“It gives us an opportunity to give back to the community that has given so much to all of us,” said Grayson Bogue, a member of TriBeta and junior biomedical science major from Decatur, Alabama. “Anytime a club does something like this, it allows us to help people.”
The fundraiser will give members a chance to give back to the biology community through a more laid-back activity like making bracelets.
Proceeds from the bracelet sales will go directly to the national organization, which helps fund future research grants and gives scholarships. The national organization also works to bring awareness to biological studies.
“I think the more we put into the foundation, the more they can help us in return,” Bogue said.
The chapter’s Vice President, Madison Corkran, a junior biomedical science major from Montgomery, Alabama, said she enjoys being part of an effort that supports both the organization and paying it forward.
“I really enjoy it,” Corkran said. “Everything we do for TriBeta and other foundations we work with is rewarding.
“TriBeta invests in us, so it’s nice to give back.”
Corkran also says the group hopes fundraisers like this will attract more students, including non-biology majors. Although students who join TriBeta don’t have to be biology majors, they do have to take a number of biology courses.
By the end of the night, the students made around 20 total bracelets. The proposed bracelet sale date was April 24 at the Trojan Center; however, the chapter postponed the sale date until more bracelets could be made.
The new date for the bracelet sale has yet to be announced.
