Students write letters to spring semester

Starting off the new semester strong, Troy’s Welcome Week committee planned a variety of welcome back events to greet new and returning Trojans. Last Thursday morning’s event tied in with the theme of “New Year's Resolutions,” holding a safe space for students to write a letter to spring semester.

“I feel like, in some way, it brings students together a little bit, and it also just makes them think about what their goal is for this semester, and what they want for this semester to see that they wouldn't normally think about,” said Liz Smith, a junior rehabilitation and disability studies major from Dothan, Alabama.  “I think it makes people be aware of what others around them are thinking and are wanting for the university, but also just gives people encouragement to keep going.”

Originally intended to take place on the Trojan Center quad, the table was later moved inside the Trojan Center due to the increasingly cold temperatures. This change allowed students to take some time to reflect in between classes and grab a bite to eat.

“I wrote my letter about finding joy in everything just because I feel like that's my motto for this year,” said Abby Gilland, a junior hospitality, tourism and event management major from Alexander City, Alabama. “Just be present and find joy in just the little things and not complain about things because time flies by fast.

“I think that's a really big thing that everyone should focus on. You never know how your little interaction with somebody can impact their day, their life and their years at Troy. I think it's important that we carry ourselves with positivity and are kind to each other.”

After another successful Welcome Week lineup, all students are invited to continue participating in clubs on campus and attend future social events.

“We’re trying to make our new students and transferring students feel welcome here on campus and turn this place into their home and make them feel more comfortable with their new transition into college,” said Rhyan Carson, a sophomore psychology major from Leeds, Alabama, who is a member of the Welcome Week committee. “I would encourage our new students and transfer students to be more plugged in with the Student Government Association (SGA) and come to their events, welcome week as well as the University’s Activities Council (UAC).”

To stay up to date with future events, students are prompted to follow the activities council @troyuac on Instagram as well as Troy’s Student Government Association @troysga on Instagram for updates.
