Sharing their love for history,  Troy’s History Club members held their annual Valentine’s Day party last Wednesday, offering students a chance to make connections, compete for prizes and unwind through friendly competition.

The event opened with a lively social gathering followed by a battle of members' historical knowledge through a Valentine’s Day–themed Kahoot.

“We just started doing this a couple of years ago,” said History Club President Matilda Ziegler, a senior American history major from Shelby, North Carolina. “We did it to give people a fun time to socialize with their friends.

“I feel like this is kind of the point in the semester where things start getting a little challenging, so we wanted to let them have a break.”

The club aims to create a welcoming environment for all students, regardless of their academic background.

“Overall, History Club is really just a club for people who like history,” Ziegler said. “We have a good mix of academic and social events,

“This is not a club that takes attendance or requires you to be here every week. If you see one event in a couple of months or even next week that you want to drop by, you’re more than welcome. We love to have new members.”

The event served as a space where students could enjoy themselves through fun activities with historical elements.

“I enjoy that I get to learn about history while also being able to just hang out,” said Ashton Harris, a sophomore biomedical science major from Phenix City, Alabama. “The fun activities are a good way to hang out with your friends or meet new people while learning something on the side.

“You get to do fun things like playing Kahoot, doing random activities, dancing, singing songs and reciting poems to build bonds and meet people.”

For many members, the club has become more than just history. It’s become a place to make lasting connections.

“I saw it on Instagram and showed up one day,” said Dani Kimbrough, a freshman criminal justice major from Athens, Alabama.“You just get to be yourself and know that there’s no pressure at all.

“I’ve definitely gotten friends out of History Club. I didn’t know any of these people the first time I showed up, and now we hang out all the time. I really love that.”

The History Club meets every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Patterson Hall room 202. To stay up to date on upcoming events or learn more about the organization, follow the club on Instagram at @troyhistoryclub.
