Students learn about study abroad opportunities at fair
Students were able to learn about study abroad and explore other countries at the Study Abroad Fair last Monday.
The fair consisted of tables from Troy Study Abroad to third-party groups that guide study abroad experiences around the globe.
Students were excited to learn about experiences available to them and gain knowledge on how study abroad works.
“I've been interested in study abroad ever since I came to Troy, and I've always known I wanted to do it,” said Karly Savillon, a freshman nursing major from Houston, Texas. “I've never been out of the U.S., so I think getting the experience of going to another country is really cool. You get to get outside of your comfort zone and experience the world.”
Savillon expressed her appreciation for the study abroad fair and programs at Troy.
“I'm excited, and I hope I can do it next summer,” Savillon said. I think in a lot of places this isn't really an option, so letting people see it is an option gives people the chance to know more about it.”
Another student hopes to use study abroad to connect to his culture.
“I would like to go to Vietnam because I am Vietnamese myself,” said Carson Nguyen, a freshman biomedical sciences major from Banks, Alabama. “I’d like to see how the locals are and really connect with the people of my culture.”
The Study Abroad Office hopes to encourage students to step out of their comfort zone and learn about their opportunities.
“The purpose of the study abroad fair is to spread awareness of how affordable study abroad can be, how accessible it is to Troy students and show how many different places you can go,” said Kristen Bryant, director of Troy Abroad.
Troy University has many connections to get students to the countries they would like to visit.
“Many people are here to support your journey. There really are a lot of us in Troy and our global network,” Bryant said.
Bryant said there are many individualized benefits for students attending study abroad trips.
“I think it depends on the student and their priorities. If students want to get more language skills, it can definitely help,” Bryant said. “It also makes students more independent, adaptable and gives them academic growth in their field.”
Studying abroad also provides professional opportunities and benefits.
“Students who go abroad are 97% more likely to find a job after graduation,” Bryant said. “They can also get a salary bump of $4000 a year.”
