Troy’s University Activities Council (UAC) continued its Welcome Week festivities with a Silent Disco that was open to all students. The event was held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the John Robert Lewis quad, where students could grab a pair of headphones and dance away.
“It’s a great way to get involved on campus,” said UAC President Jamie Parker, who is a junior nursing major from Millbrook, Alabama. “With all the people that come out to events, it’s so easy to make friends, connect, network and find someone who could probably be your best friend, maybe even marry you one day.”

Members of UAC place headphones on the table in front of John Robert Lewis Hall to prepare for Silent Disco.
Silent Disco works by allowing a pair of headphones to tune into a DJ’s station. It allows the user to navigate between a few channels, so they have more options of music to listen and dance to. This event had three different channels: red, blue and green.
“I say anything that the green station has been playing has been really good,” said Leilani Guion, a master’s student in coaching from Orlando, Florida.
Students choose the station that best fits their vibes. The music ranged from 2000s pop to modern rap, line dances and even some classics like the Bee Gees. The students were “Staying Alive” with the fun.
“Everybody is just grabbing headphones and having a good time,” Parker said.
For some students, Silent Disco takes away the nerves of meeting new people, which is why it is considered a great Welcome Event for students on campus.
“I like that you can be yourself,” said Lindsey Bright, an elementary education major from Dothan, Alabama. “Everybody’s in their own world, so you can just do whatever.”
UAC says events like Silent Disco can make a college experience unforgettable and emphasizes getting involved on campus.
“You make your own experience,” said Parker. “So, if you come out to events every Wednesday like this and if we have this amount of attendance every event, then Troy would be the best place for them.”
UAC hopes that by sharing music and having fun, Silent Disco can bring students together. For those that are interested and would like to help put on future events, UAC holds meetings every Monday at 5 p.m. in Trojan Center 119.
