SONIC SHOWDOWN

The pretzel tops the corndog, no matter the price, in flavor and satisfaction

When it comes to cheap eats and quick snacks, few things are as iconic as Sonic’s corn dog and the superior soft pretzel. Both are beloved for their simplicity and convenience, but when you line them up, the pretzel takes the crown for value, versatility and staying power.

Let’s start with Sonic’s corn dog. There’s no denying the appeal of biting into that crispy, golden shell with a juicy hot dog inside. And when Sonic runs their 50 cent or 99 cent corn dog specials, it feels like an unbeatable deal. For less than a dollar, you’re getting a nostalgic fairground treat from the comfort of your car window. On the surface, that sounds like the ultimate snack bargain.

But here’s the catch: the corn dog’s value only holds up during those limited promotions. On a regular day, Sonic charges closer to $2 per corn dog, which doesn’t stretch very far for your money. Even during the discount days, it’s still just fried batter and a basic hot dog. Is it delicious? Yes, yes it is, but not exactly versatile. Pair it with fries or tater tots, and you’ve got a heavier, greasier snack that doesn’t always sit well in the belly, especially if you are on the go.

The soft pretzel on the other hand, is the ultimate winner. Whether you grab one from Auntie Anne’s at the mall, Wetzel’s Pretzels at an airport or even a gas station convenience store, the price usually lands around $3–$4. While that’s slightly more than Sonic’s discounted corn dog, the pretzel offers more substance and options. You can go with the classic salted pretzel, add cheese sauce for dipping, or branch out into flavors like cinnamon sugar. It can be savory, sweet, or even stuffed with cheese for a heartier bite.

Unlike the corn dog, the pretzel adapts to your craving instead of locking you into one note.

There’s also something to be said about quality over quantity. A pretzel isn’t trying to trick you with a flashy “special day” price—it delivers the same reliable product year-round. And when you consider portion size, a pretzel often fills you up more than a single corn dog.

Plus, it feels lighter and less greasy, making it a snack you can enjoy without needing to crash on the couch afterward. I can personally attest to this as I would typically order three  corn dogs compared to the one pretzel that I would order.

In today’s world of fast food, the pretzel proves itself as the smarter buy. While Sonic’s corn dog has its nostalgic charm and momentary bargains, the pretzel consistently offers variety, balance, and lasting satisfaction. If I’m putting my dollars toward a snack, I’ll choose the warm, chewy pretzel every time.
