Troy’s Student Government Association (SGA) partnered with the library to hold a “Blind Date with a Book” table in the library lobby. The library purchased multiple copies of three different books with beach themes for students to take and read over spring break.
“Every semester, SGA Academic Affairs holds an Academic Excellence Week,” said Emily McCollum, a junior accounting major from Fairhope, Alabama. She also serves as the academic affairs chair for SGA. “Since this week is right before spring break, we wanted to do a sort of academic rest week, so we partnered with the library to give out free books.
“It’s still promoting a little bit of academics over your break, but it’s a bit more fun.”
The purpose of the “Blind Date with a Book” was to promote reading in a relaxed setting.
With the stress of midterms, SGA hoped to offer a reprieve while still encouraging academic activities.
“A lot of time, you’re reading for classes or study materials, and you’re not reading for pleasure,” said Caleb Smith, a senior risk management and insurance major from Gadsden, Alabama. “This is just kind of a way to kick back, relax, and move into spring break.”
“Reading is a great way for you to escape and not realize that you’re retaining new information,” said Elizabeth Crawley, a junior collaborative education major from Brantley, Alabama. “It’s a fun way for you to let go of all the stress and worries you have going on while also still learning.”
The event was held by the Academic Affairs Committee of SGA as part of their Academic Excellence Week, which is March 9-14 . The members have many events throughout the week, including giving out free scantrons at the Trojan Center.
“The Academic Affairs committee is focused on the academic wellbeing of all students,” Crawley said. “We are committed to finding ways to make academics more fun instead of stressful.”
SGA as a whole works to serve the student body in different ways. SGA frequently holds events catered to student life and interests, and they serve as a voice between the student body and administration forstudent voices to be heard.
