As my Troy career ends, I’ve reflected on all my achievements, and working on The Tropolitan is one of my biggest. The journalism department has been nothing but supportive all four years, but this past semester working as copy editor has brought me closer to my peers, given me insight into the industry and prepared me for future opportunities.
If I had to give advice to a freshman me, I’d tell myself to get involved with The Tropolitan sooner— it’s an experience on campus unlike any other.

It’s hard to find a community as close and friendly as this one, and anyone interested is welcomed with open arms. All of the more tedious parts of the job are made easier by the talent and knowledge of those involved, and Dr. Cooper is a fabulous mentor to growing journalists. Each member of staff is so dedicated and passionate, so to anybody considering taking part but scared to take the leap, you will not be left to your own devices.
No question, worry or issue you have is unique, and an army of people will come to your aid. Before this semester, I had no experience editing, just a basic understanding of AP Style and a very convincing recruiter.
Along the way, I’ve expanded my resume, but more significantly, I’ve learned so much and become more responsible and reliable. Not to mention, having a consistent and overwhelmingly positive “workplace environment” has reduced a lot of anxiety about my future. To those considering writing for the paper— do it.
Whatever it is you want to write, show up, and write it; your writing abilities will improve with practice. To those considering an editing position, you’ll become a quote format correcting robot, and you’ll love it. The Tropolitan will be one of my most missed Troy experiences post-graduation.
