Rec holds AmazingRace Around Troy

Students got competitive at the Troy Campus Recreation’s second annual Amazing Race Around Troy University on Saturday.

The event, based on the CBS show “The Amazing Race,” gave students a chance to get out of their dorms, meet new people and learn more about the Troy campus.

“Originally, it was to get the students who live in the dorms engaged more, but we have opened it up to all of the students now,” said Matthew Pisarski, assistant director of Campus Recreation. “On a weekend when there’s not a football game or something, we wanted to offer them an opportunity to do something here on campus.”

Myles Wilson, a freshman risk management and insurance major from Huntsville, Alabama, shared what brought him to the race.

“I was actually working out at the gym with some friends, and I saw the Amazing Race poster, and I was like, yeah I’m definitely going to do this,” Wilson said. “It looked fun, and I’m competitive, so I was like let me sign up for it.”

To start, students were given a clue that would lead them to their first station, and they would go from there following the next clue. Whichever team completed all clues the quickest won the race.

Student volunteers manned each station around campus where participating students found their clues, including the Trojan Fitness Center, Hawkins Hall, Rushing Hall, John Robert Lewis Hall and the Trojan Center.

Wilson and his teammates, Anna Claire Mock, a freshman nursing major from Cochran, Georgia, and Christian Cassidy, a sophomore accounting major from Navarre, Florida, had never met before the race but worked together to win it. Each member cited the obstacles as what they looked forward to most.

Following the race, participants gathered at the Fitness Center for a cookout with complimentary food and drinks, and the winning team was awarded a raffle basket.

Mary Frances Gainey, Campus Recreation program coordinator, shared hopes of continuing and growing this tradition.

“I hope to keep doing it,” Gainey said. “It was definitely bigger than last year’s, and I’m glad we had more teams participate, so I’m excited.”
